Abstract
It is possible that statins, by their dual capacity to modulate (both stimulate and suppress) immune responses, could play a role in influencing the course of autoimmune diseases. Consequently, our investigation was designed to explore how statins impact both the innate and adaptive branches of the immune system, as well as their effect on the crucial mechanism of self-tolerance. This was achieved through the comprehensive measurement of various antibody profiles, specifically including the detection and quantification of autoantibodies, such as antinuclear antibodies and Creatinine kinase, Aldolase, HMGCR antibody, Albumin and Bilirubin and Alanine transaminase, Aspartate aminotransferase, Our investigation employed a nested case-control design, thoughtfully implemented within a pre-existing, population-based cohort to examine the effects of statins on the immune system. From this robust cohort, we carefully selected 50 individuals actively using statins to serve as our cases, alongside 30 non-users who acted as controls. Meticulous matching was performed for each participant based on age, sex, and the precise date of serum collection to minimize confounding. To quantitatively assess statins' influence on immune function, multivariate regression analyses were subsequently performed. While our findings indicated that the median levels of key markers such as antinuclear antibodies, albumin, and bilirubin remained within normal ranges for statin users, an increased prevalence of elevated Creatine kinase levels was notably observed in this group compared to non-users. In this specific general population sub-sample, a discernible anti-inflammatory effect associated with statin use was observed.
