Abstract
Background: The non-depolarizing muscle relaxant (NDMR) is generally used in anesthesia for facilitation of intubations and muscle relaxations. Nevertheless, pains during injections remain as significant concerns. Aim of the Study: The aim of the study was to compare levels of pain scores related to various types of NDMR (Atracurium and Rocuronium) during injections. Patients and Methods: This study was applied on (60) patients whose ages ranged between (18–65) years and underwent different surgical operations. Patients are categorized into two groups: (31) patients receiving IV Atracurium and (29) receiving Esmeron (Rocuronium) in different doses. Following IV injection of the drug, immediate numerical pain scores (0, 1, 2 and 3) was recorded using the standardized numerical rating scales. For comparing the mean pain scores and determining the significant variations between the drugs, the statistical analysis was done. Results and Discussion: The results showed that 30 mg Atracurium drug was the least painful agent, with a significant lower mean pain score in comparison with the multiple Esmeron doses (p< 0.05). The Esmeron drug of 40 mg, 45 mg and 50 mg revealed significant higher pain score compared to Atracurium. It was found that males showed slightly higher mean pain score (1.4) in comparison with its mean in females (1.23). Patients who had greater heart rate (>120bpm) demonstrated higher pain perceptions. Also, a non-significant correlation was observed between BMI and pain scores. Conclusions: There was an association between the lower dose of Atracurium (30mg) and the least pain during injections, indicating that it was a desirable choice to minimize patient's discomforts. The higher doses of Esmeron were shown to be more painful. Additional studies are suggested for exploring pain reduction strategies during receiving such drugs.
